This showy annual is a late bloomer, usually from July to September.  But wait, once the flowers are starting lose their luster there are still plenty of uses for this variety.  The seeds of Nigella damascena when ground are said to taste like pepper and in fact were used as a pepper-like spice before peppercorns were widely available.  The taste is a cross between pepper and oregano.  These flowers also work great in fresh arrangements and cut and dried.
